SnipSVG and our presentation tool HelpXplain are close siblings. If you have used HelpXplain before, you will recognize the annotation objects and find that they have much functionality in common. So, how do SnipSVG and HelpXplain compare and can they be used together?

Designed for:

Creating and annotating screenshots (still images) in SVG and many other image formats.

Think of a SnipSVG image as a single non-animated slide.

Creating interactive presentations in HTML format with multiple slides with seamless zoom, pan and rotate transitions and individual object animations.

You can think of HelpXplain as an animation tool to show multiple SnipSVG images in a slideshow. In HelpXplain, it is possible to add audio and animations to individual objects.

File Formats

The .snipx and .xplain formats have the same basic structure (compound zip archives)

Compatibility

SnipSVG can open .xplain presentations.  However, it only reads the first slide and  animations are ignored. SnipSVG can only save .snipx, not .xplain.

HelpXplain can open .snipx images as a single-slide presentation. HelpXplain can only save .xplain, not .snipx.

Clipboard

Clipboard operations between the two applications are compatible.

Collaboration

If you have used HelpXplain before to create single-slide still images, you can open and edit them directly in SnipSVG.

Use HelpXplain to turn a .snipx still image into an animated HTML presentation.

Never heard of HelpXplain™?

Well, you may have seen it in action already!

HelpXplain slideshows and screencasts integrate seamlessly into any HTML documentation. HelpXplain's output is pure HTML5 and Javascript, cross-platform and tailored for desktop and mobile web browsers. Most animations you see in our own documentation are in fact HelpXplain slideshows.

Here is one example, just click on the image below to play.

Remember: this is not a video, it is a HTML5 animation with individual slides that you can edit, extend and easily translate. Here's what you can do with HelpXplain:
